At Kingsley, we believe that education is not just about academic achievement – it’s about developing the whole person and enabling the resilient, skilled-up adults of the future.
In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and complex, equipping our students with the tools to thrive emotionally, socially and mentally is more important than ever. That’s why we’ve developed our unique Positive Education Programme, built around the acronym SOAR: Strengths, Optimism & Outcomes, Awareness & Attention and Resilience & Relationships.
SOAR is a distinctive philosophy that shapes our approach to student wellbeing and personal growth. It is embedded into our school culture – from form time to everyday classroom interactions – and involves not only students, but also staff, families and the wider community. Through SOAR, we bring The Kingsley Way to life: a set of core values that define who we are and what we stand for. These values – acting with kindness, striving for excellence, creating opportunity and building community – are at the heart of everything we do. They foster strong relationships, a sense of pride, mutual respect and a deep sense of belonging.
S – Strengths: Recognising and Cultivating What Makes Us Unique
Every student has a unique set of strengths – qualities that, when recognised and practised, can become powerful tools for growth and confidence. In our SOAR sessions, students are encouraged to identify their personal strengths, such as creativity, kindness, leadership or perseverance. They also explore the strengths of others, which builds a culture of appreciation and mutual respect.
We also celebrate community strengths. Whether it’s a student showing compassion to a peer, or a group working collaboratively to solve a problem, we highlight and reinforce these moments. This helps students see that strengths are not just individual traits, but are shared values that bind us together.
O – Optimism & Outcomes: Developing a Positive Mindset
Optimism is not about ignoring life’s challenges – it’s about approaching them with a mindset that believes in the possibility of growth and success. Through SOAR, we help students set meaningful goals and develop the belief that their efforts can lead to positive outcomes.
We teach students how to reframe setbacks as opportunities for learning, and how to use their character strengths to overcome obstacles. This approach builds not only confidence, but also a sense of agency. Students learn that they are capable of shaping their own futures.
A – Awareness & Attention: Cultivating Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence
In a world full of distractions, the ability to focus attention and be present is a vital skill. Our programme includes mindfulness practices that help students to develop greater self-awareness and emotional regulation. They learn to notice their thoughts and feelings without judgement, and to respond to situations with clarity and calm.
Emotional intelligence is also a key focus. Students are guided in recognising and naming their emotions, understanding how these emotions influence their behaviour and developing empathy for others. These skills are essential not only for personal wellbeing, but also for building strong, respectful relationships.
R – Resilience & Relationships: Growing Through Challenges, Together
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity and it’s a skill that can be learned and strengthened. Through SOAR, students explore strategies for managing stress, coping with setbacks and maintaining motivation. They also learn that resilience is not about going it alone; it’s about knowing when and how to seek support.
Relationships are at the heart of wellbeing. We place a strong emphasis on connection between students, between staff and students and between school and home. Through team-building activities, collaborative projects and open conversations, we build a sense of belonging and trust.
A Community Effort
What makes SOAR truly powerful is that it’s not confined to a single lesson or initiative – it’s a shared commitment. Staff model the principles of SOAR in their interactions with students and each other. Families are invited to engage with the programme, reinforcing its values at home. Governors and community members support our vision, recognising that wellbeing is foundational to lifelong success.
We know that when students feel seen, supported and empowered, they are more likely to flourish in all areas of life. SOAR helps us to create a school environment where every individual can thrive, and where wellbeing is not an add-on, but a way of being.
As we continue to develop and refine our Positive Education Programme, alongside a considered and evidence-based approach to wellbeing and pastoral care, we remain guided by the belief that wellbeing is a community consideration. We are certain that our students will rise to every challenge and soar even higher.
