A-level geographers spent a highly successful few days conducting fieldwork in North Yorkshire. Kingsley Sixth Former Felicity shares more about the trip and some of its highlights…

Our recent A-level geography field trip to North Yorkshire with King’s High was an unforgettable experience, both socially and academically. The experience gave me the opportunity to make new friends, enhance my teamwork skills and apply my knowledge. Over the course of the trip, we explored key geographical sites, applied theoretical knowledge in the field and developed essential data collection techniques.

One of the most exciting aspects of the trip was our visit to Flamborough Head, a stunning coastal location renowned for its chalk cliffs and unique landforms. Here, we witnessed coastal processes in action, such as wave-cut platforms, caves, arches and stacks, which reinforced my understanding of erosion, transportation and deposition. Observing these features first-hand brought what I had learned at school to life, which really helped to deepen my understanding of the topic.

At Skipsea, we examined coastal erosion and its impact on communities. Seeing the rapid retreat of the coastline and the consequences for local residents made the issue of coastal management feel far more tangible. We discussed the effectiveness of different coastal defences and considered sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of erosion. This real-world application of our studies helped us grasp the urgency and complexity of coastal management strategies.

Scarborough provided the perfect setting to trial a range of data collection techniques to help with our human geography section, fieldwork skills and understanding the importance of accurate data in geographical investigations. Working in teams, we learned how to collect, record and interpret data effectively, skills that will be invaluable for our coursework.

Beyond the academic benefits, the trip was a fantastic social experience. Collaborating with students from King’s High allowed us to form new friendships and share perspectives on geography. The trip strengthened our sense of community and made the learning experience even more enjoyable.

The beautiful weather throughout our trip added to the overall enjoyment, allowing us to carry out fieldwork without disruption and fully appreciate the coastal landscapes!
