At The Kingsley Sixth Form, preparing students for the future means more than academic achievement (though we are proud of their successes). It’s about nurturing well-rounded young adults who are confident, compassionate, resilient and ready to face a rapidly changing world. Our unique setting, strong sense of community and commitment to both wellbeing and academic growth enable students to thrive, at Kingsley and beyond.
Our Sixth Form is distinct in many ways. Being part of a through-school offers the best of both worlds: the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a wider school community where students can lead, mentor and inspire those younger than themselves and the independence and focus that comes with studying in a dedicated Sixth Form environment. This blend of independence and connection allows students to take pride in being role models while carving out their own identity as young adults preparing for life’s next chapter.
Our team of dedicated Sixth Form staff provides outstanding academic and pastoral care. With small cohorts, tutors can closely monitor wellbeing and academic progress. They are committed to ensuring that students are equipped not just to pass their exams, but to thrive – intellectually, emotionally and socially. Form time is purposeful, with a focus on building an A-level mindset, encouraging students to take ownership of their studies and understand their individual learning styles. After each set of mock exams and Individual Progress Reports (IPRs), tutors hold one-to-one goal-setting meetings to review progress, refine strategies and ensure that each student feels supported and on track.
Perhaps one of the most important things we do at Kingsley is ensure our students leave school with the tools to care for their mental health. We talk openly about mental health and emotional wellbeing during assemblies and form time, giving students practical strategies to support themselves and those around them. Our Sixth Form Learning Mentor and Teaching Assistant offer regular one-to-one and group sessions focused on revision techniques, learning strategies and emotional guidance. The small, close-knit nature of our Sixth Form means that every student is known and supported by staff who are genuinely invested in their success. Tutors are quick to notice when something isn’t quite right and when more help is needed, students can be referred to our in-school counsellor.
Through regular Positive Education sessions, students explore their strengths, emotions and goals. These sessions are grounded in the research of Martin Seligman’s Positive Psychology, helping students to understand what makes them flourish and how they can build meaningful lives. Mindfulness is also an integral part of our culture, with regular calming and restorative activities such as desk yoga, guided meditation and origami. ‘No Phone Fridays’ have become a firm favourite, with phones set aside during social times, creating a refreshing opportunity for real connection. Jigsaw puzzles, board games and collaborative art projects encourage conversation and community in the common room.
Our Sixth Formers are not just learners – they are leaders, volunteers and changemakers. Leadership opportunities exist in both Year 12 and Year 13; from organising charity events and co-curricular clubs to taking on key roles in sports days and house competitions. Many of our students also volunteer at a local primary school on Friday afternoons. These experiences build more than a CV; they instil a lifelong commitment to community and service, encouraging students to see themselves as part of something larger and to recognise the difference they can make in the world.
Preparation for life beyond Kingsley begins early. In Year 12, students start exploring their post-18 options through individual conversations with staff, helping them identify their passions and aspirations. Whether they’re considering applying to university, exploring apprenticeships, or still undecided, they receive the guidance they need to make informed, confident choices. Each student is paired with a dedicated UCAS tutor who meets with them regularly to review their progress. We also use the UNIFROG platform to support this journey, giving students access to comprehensive information on university courses, apprenticeships and further education opportunities.
In June, students participate in two days dedicated solely to post-18 planning, which includes visiting the UCAS Discovery Exhibition in Birmingham. We also host mock interviews, finance workshops and higher education evenings to ensure students and their families are well-prepared. Parental involvement is key and we welcome and encourage it throughout the UCAS process. In Year 13, our students receive guidance on budgeting, loans and financial planning, helping them navigate what is often one of the more daunting aspects of leaving school and entering the world of university or work.
We’re proud of the young people who walk through the doors of our Sixth Form each day – they are curious, compassionate and full of potential and it’s a privilege to support them as they prepare for their next steps.
